SAFETY & MECHANICAL COMPLIANCE DIRECTIVE
Towing Safety & Mechanical Disclaimer
EXECUTIVE SAFETY SUMMARY (BLUF)
Flat-towing (four-wheels-down dinghy towing) requires strict adherence to OEM manufacturer guidelines. The vehicle owner and motorhome operator assume 100% legal and mechanical liability for verifying transfer case neutral sequencing, baseplate installation torque, supplemental braking operation, and remaining within gross vehicle weight limits.

Strict Reliance on Manufacturer Owner’s Manuals
The flat-towing information, charts, and curb weights provided on RVToad are compiled from official manufacturer guides for informational purposes only. Always consult the specific year, make, model, and drivetrain section of the official vehicle Owner’s Manual before attempting to flat-tow any vehicle.
Automotive manufacturers alter transmission software, electronic power steering lock behavior, and transfer case gearings across trim levels without public bulletin updates.
Weight Ratings & Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR)
It is the sole responsibility of the motorhome operator to ensure that the total towed weight (including baseplate, tow bar, auxiliary braking system, fuel, and cargo) does not exceed:
- The motorhome chassis hitch receiver rating and maximum tongue weight.
- The motorhome Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR).
- The physical capacity ratings of the tow bar, safety cables, and mounting pins.
Auxiliary Braking Systems & Breakaway Switches
Most US states and Canadian provinces legally mandate the use of a supplemental auxiliary braking system on towed vehicles over specified weight thresholds (often 3,000 lbs). A functional emergency breakaway switch with fresh battery reserve and properly installed diode taillight wiring are mandatory requirements on every trip.
